Who do we serve?
The individuals we serve must have a primary diagnosis of I/DD (Intellectual and Developmental Disability) formerly MR/DD (Mental Retardation and Developmental Disability). We also accept men and women who are dually diagnosed e.g., mental illness, serious behavior issues, or seizure disorders.
Where are Stonebrook’s residences?
All seven of our group homes, as well as our Administrative offices are located in Berkeley County, West Virginia, in and around historic Martinsburg. We are approximately 1.5 hours from Washington, DC, and less than 30 minutes from Hagerstown, MD, Winchester, VA, and Chambersburg, PA.

What is West Virginia Waiver and is it necessary to be eligible?
The West Virginia Waiver program provides the necessary funding to care for I/DD adults. An Individualized Waiver Budget is determined for each program participant. This is the amount of money approved and allocated for the specific services and supports needed. Medicaid then pays the agency for services received. View the Consumer Handbook here. Please note that room and board along with personal expenses are separate and billed directly to the residents on a monthly basis.
We know that you want the best care for your family and so do we. Healthcare for people with special needs can mean extraordinary costs for any number of reasons, e.g., one on one staffing, medical supplies, or equipment. For most families, the cost of long term care is prohibitive, so we highly recommend that you begin the process of obtaining a Waiver slot. Our Service Coordinators will be glad to assist you with any questions or concerns.

In terms of daily living expenses, how are personal finances handled?
Living expenses vary depending on the needs of the individual and are separate from the cost of Waiver approved services, such as nursing and transportation. Room and board is set at $525.00 per month, and each resident is expected to pay for personal items, medical expenses (not covered by insurance), and clothing. If the person’s resources are severely limited, Stonebrook will make every effort to accommodate reasonable needs. Stonebrook acts as payee representative for 91% of our residents, all of whom receive income from Social Security which is deposited monthly to their own separate savings accounts. It is by no means a requirement that we act as payee; we simply offer you the option as a convenience. No fees are charged for handling personal finances.
May I call or visit any time?
Each home has a landline telephone and you may feel free to call at any time. We welcome and encourage short visits from family members. It is recommended that you call first; just to be sure they are at home. You may also arrange to have a meal at the house if you wish. We ask that you keep in mind that this is now home which means he/she has a routine, new housemates, and a level of independence that needs to be maintained.
Can the residents go home to visit their families?
Yes. Home visits may be arranged with the group home supervisor. We ask that you give several days notice to allow for making the necessary preparations (packing, staff scheduling, etc). Our residents look forward to and enjoy going home for a short visit to celebrate holidays, birthdays, and special occasions.
How do the residents receive mail, gifts, or packages?

Do all residents have to use the same doctor or can they continue treatment with their own primary physician or specialist?
We understand that you have placed trust in your physician and that it can be difficult to adjust to a new medical professional, so when possible, we will try to use your preferred doctor. Otherwise, we will utilize the services of Shenandoah Community Health.
Do I need to provide furniture or bedding?
All rooms are furnished, but if you would like, you may bring items to decorate and personalize their room; we want them to feel at home.
What if there is an emergency?
Our homes are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and our three nurses are available at all times. All staff is thoroughly trained to handle all manner of emergencies. We will inform you, should any crisis arise that may concern you.
Are you able to accommodate special dietary needs?
Yes, in fact we do that for a number of our residents who are diabetic. All meals are planned for optimum nutritional value and taste. Our nurses closely monitor the menus at each house to be sure that everyone’s needs are met.
Are your homes wheelchair accessible?
At this time, Princess House and Talbot Avenue are equipped with wheelchair access. Should the need arise, we are able to make short-term accommodations for wheelchair access at any of the other homes.
We attend church regularly - do you take residents to worship services?
Yes, we do take some of the residents to services when we are able to. Please let us know your preference and we will make every effort to get them there.
What if a resident engages in combative or aggressive behavior?
We are experienced with and well-equipped to handle individuals with strong behaviors. After observation of the person, our Therapeutic Consultant develops a training plan that is monitored and evaluated for effectiveness. Once implemented, the behaviors are observed and the plan revised if necessary. The nurses will work with the psychiatrist as well to determine other avenues of intervention.
